    Reflective Learning-UK (RL-UK) is a values driven, social enterprise working collaboratively to improve people’s lives and livelihoods through reflective learning. It comprises an independent, multi-professional group of personal and organisational improvement strategists. RL-UK uses their special strengths-based approach to enable individuals, groups, organisations and communities to move forward positively. It is called ‘participatory and appreciative action and reflection (PAAR). There are five aspects to PAAR.

    These are;

    SPACE (how we make, take and shape it to achieve humanly significant goals)

    PARTICIPATION (becoming authentically involved in decision-making)

    APPRECIATION (valuing others through conversations of positive regard)

    EMPOWERMENT (having the strength to change values, practices and policies that perpetuate inequality, prejudice and exclusion)

    ETHICS (acting with courage to do the right thing)

    RL-UK was established in 2001. Its strengths-based approach has been co-developed in different cultural, organisational and community contexts in Europe, West and East Africa and India. It is used to support people and communities wishing to live and work in new, different and better ways. RL-UK’s approach is based upon the assumption that every individual, group organisation or community has something that works well. RL-UK uses strengths as the point for creating conversations of positive regard and processes for positive change. The conversation starts with a focus on what is already going well, what is successful, hopeful or promising, RL-UK identifies the root causes of each of these and offers a sustainable, strengths-based approach to the building and sustaining of innovative, ethical and empowering workplace and community cultures.

    RL-UK’s values are:

    Appreciating and building upon individual and collective strengths, gifts and talents.

    Enabling individuals, groups and organisations to confidently account for themselves through strengths-based conversations.

    Aligning values with actions to enable individuals and groups to advocate effectively for improvements in working practices, workplaces and community life.

    Mobilising for and then scaling-up success, from the individual, through groups and across whole organisations and communities.

    Developing strategies for individuals, groups and communities to effectively participate in decisions that affect their lives and livelihoods.

    Currently RL-UK works in partnership with other Reflective Learning centres which are in Rome (Italy), Abuja (Nigeria) and Kampala (Uganda). RL-UK’s portfolio of services and products can be accessed on other parts of this website.

    It is possible to become a Member of RL-UK. The subscription covers reduced rates at all RL-UK hosted workshops and conferences, access to RL-UK’s specialist library, preferential costs on all RL-UK products and a limited amount of face-to-face mentoring support.

    RL-UK co-ordinates the international, peer-reviewed journal called 'Reflective Practice: International and Multidisciplinary Perspectives'.
